The best approach in this case is to rename the file to something like UScustom. DIC file. DIC is not present in the folder then create an empty file of that name with a text editor.

The above is for Word and Word works a little differently but for compatibility it will more or less accept custom dictionaries from earlier versions but adds some twists of its own. This was explained clearly and as others have mentioned, was also driving me bonkers. Your best bet is to split the dictionary into two or more custom dictionaries based on theme. Alternatively, create a new custom dictionary and set it as your default dictionary, so that Word adds new words to it instead of to the previous custom dictionary.

If your dictionary file is smaller than 64 KB, it may be corrupted. You may not be able to tell whether it's corrupted, though, so the next step is to create a new dictionary anyway:.

Open a Windows Explorer window to the folder containing your custom dictionary. Rename your dictionary file, changing its. I would finish typing and would look up to see the words being typed in slow motion, one letter at a time. YAY, it finally works… Not sure what caused it but it was pretty annoying. Thank you so much for this. Thanks, very useful. This procedure worked for me. I had migrated from a windows 10 system to my new computer with Windows This fixed the problem.
