That's it! Deleted Member Guest Jun 15, To be honest, the range IS NOT the place to work on distance, you should just work on the mechanics of the swing. Even trying to work on shaping your shots can be a waste of time as with worn dimples the ball won't react the way you expect. I just concentrate purely on my swing then use practice rounds with proper balls to find out my distances. Joined Mar 4, Messages 8, No myth. Unless your range has very good balls, the distance is compromised.

More noticeable on the longer clubs. Rumour has it, when they set up our range, they moved all the boards nearer to take this into account. Anything over a 7 iron, I take no notice whatsoever. Why I take a mental note in about 0. Force of habit I guess. Same with the marker, which is actually a pole in the ground, I hit that sometimes too.

These tiddlers are for the practice ground. The range I use has full distance ball so it doesn't create a problem. Range work is about working on the swing and quality of the strike. Distance isn't important. Dispersion is key. Joined May 7, Messages 1. The range at my neck of the woods recently had toptracer put in all the bays, they use Srixon Range Balls, i thought they didn't go as far as i was carrying my drives between and , i put an old banged up ProV1 down and carried it , but then 1 day i was really warmed up and i carried a range ball , i am starting to believe its the person swinging the club and not the ball thats the issue!

Ken, here is another article on the subject. A robot was used for testing. The ONLY ball you should care about is the one you hit on the golf course. It would be senseless for driving ranges to make distance compensations because conditions are too variable. I did a test at an indoors practice bay, using a 60d wedge and their practice ball and my own Titleist Pro V1. Spin was very noticeable — rm vs.

I was hitting yd shots against a simulator and the practice ball was harder for me to keep the launch angle under 30d, which was my goal. Been trying to figure out why my irons start grouping at the top end at the driving range, but never really notice on course. Thinking this is it. Plus the balls are very old and worn. I could get a solid shot that goes my normal distance but I really had to try for it. Possibly a low trajectory flight.

I would say I hit my irons farther than most because I de-loft the club, and spin it less than most players. I love these kinds of comparisons and more importantly it puts Snell back on my radar to give an honest go of.

As far as de-lofting your irons, absolutely you do that but no-one ever talks about the loft of in these tests. Those were common 5 iron lofts just a few model years ago. I hit a large bucket, about balls. Most testing has shown a negligible loss in distance when hitting range balls with driver, compared to regular balls. YouTube golfing personality Ali Taylor tested three clubs — his degree wedge, 7-iron and driver — by hitting range balls versus Titleist Pro V1x balls to determine whether there was any noticeable distance loss.

What the data did show, however, that wedges and irons impart far less spin on range balls than they do with premium balls. Another series of similar tests carried out by fellow YouTuber Matt Fryer yielded similar results, as demonstrated in this video. Range balls, as a general rule, will travel up to 10 yards less in distance when struck with wedges or short irons.
